The Difference: Synthetic vs. Bio-Identical

Bio-identical hormones are much different from synthetic hormone replacement in that bio-identical hormones are metabolized, stored, and converted into other hormones naturally.

Bio-identical hormones are of the exact same chemical function and structure, as those produced by human reproductive organs and adrenal glands.  They are identical and therefore illicit little if any side effects. Synthetic hormones are generic and the same hormone will affect every person differently.  BHRT is derived from plants instead of animals and therefore no animal byproducts or horse urine is used. Synthetic hormones are not identical to those in the human body. They are produced from animals and have different chemical structures and functionality of human hormones. These hormones produce side effects because after the hormone is absorbed and used it produces a byproduct that is significantly different from those produced from human hormones. These byproducts could be needed for other functions in your body or just be waste. In the synthetic hormone the byproduct might not have the right characteristics needed for these pathways and could potentially be harmful.
